Moving on from Heroku — Part 1
I work in a SaaS company with a strong foothold in the aviation industry. This article outlines an our evaluation process for moving a production SaaS application away from Heroku. The application in question is a large-scale Ruby on Rails system currently running primarily on Heroku. The goal of this exploration is to identify a platform that offers an equivalent — or improved — fit for the requirements at hand. Rather than managing infrastructure directly, the preference is to rely on managed services to reduce operational overhead on the development team. As a result, infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) solutions are not a primary focus, and the evaluation is centered around platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and managed platform offerings.
